Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (MvC2), released in 2000 by Capcom, is the fourth game in the Marvel vs. Capcom crossover fighting series, blending characters from Marvel Comics and Capcom’s universes. It features 3-on-3 tag-team battles, expanding on the 2-on-2 mechanics of previous entries, with a roster of 56 playable characters, including Marvel icons like Wolverine and Capcom stars like Ryu from Street Fighter. The game introduced a simplified control scheme and a new “Variable Assist” system, allowing players to call in teammates for support moves, making it more accessible to casual players while retaining depth for competitive play. Its 2.5D graphics combine 2D-animated sprites with 3D backgrounds, a first for the franchise, delivering a visually striking experience.

The game’s narrative centers on a truce between heroes and villains to battle the villain Abyss, culminating in a symbolic victory as Ruby Heart casts Abyss’s orb into the sea. Originally launched in Japanese arcades, MvC2 was ported to platforms like Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and iOS over 12 years, gaining a lasting legacy as one of the greatest fighting games, widely played in tournaments. Its influence persisted despite a decade-long hiatus after Capcom lost the Marvel license, with a sequel eventually released in 2011. MvC2 remains celebrated for its chaotic, fast-paced gameplay and groundbreaking roster, cementing its status as a genre-defining classic.
