Before being elected as Canadian prime minister that evening, Liberal leader Mark Carney spoke to the BBC Monday about the nation’s relationship with the U.S. and President Donald Trump.

Carney – who is now set to travel to the White House “within the next week or less,” according to Trump – indirectly addressed the Republican’s leader’s repeated threats to annex Canada and impose further tariffs.

“We deserve respect, we expect respect, and I’m sure we’ll get it in due course again,” Carney said.

Speaking at a Republican cabinet meeting Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed he had spoke to Carney on the phone and congratulated the “gentleman” before they spoke about making a deal on tariffs in the Oval Office.
