Today we’re diving into the underground world of fungi with Olga from Mushroom Mountain. She grew up foraging mushrooms in the forests of Bosnia and Hercegovina, learning from her grandparents which ones to eat, which to toss, and how to live with the land instead of just on it. These days, she runs Mushroom Mountain, a powerhouse operation producing spawn for edible and medicinal varieties, plus mushroom extracts and honeys under the Mycomatrix label.
But that’s just scratching the surface. Olga also leads a wild mushroom food safety certification program that’s FDA-endorsed and accepted by seven states so far. She’s not just growing mushrooms—she’s building systems. Whether it’s teaching others to identify wild fungi or showing how mushrooms can heal soil and filter toxins, her work sits right at the intersection of ecology, food, and medicine.
In this episode, we zero in on King Stropharia, aka the Garden Giant. This mushroom is a soil-building machine that turns wood chips into rich humus while helping plants thrive and holding moisture where it matters. We’ll talk about its role in permaculture, how to use it in garden paths and hugelkultur beds, and why fungi are the unsung engineers of healthy ecosystems. If you’ve got dirt, you need to hear this.
