Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Again, the Zen master Dogen offers us a paradox. Do not think you will necessarily be aware of your own enlightenment, he says. This means that the very nature of enlightenment is a loss of ego. And a loss of the sense of a separate self. If there's no separate self, what is there to be aware of one's own enlightenment? Enlightenment is non dual. By definition it means non dual awareness. Non dual awareness means we are present with all things. All things are present. And all things are present with us. It's not something that we will sit and savor and enjoy like a spectator. Enlightenment is not something. It's not a spectator sport. It's something we are fully engaged in participating in.
