In today’s episode of Art Stream, host Mark Morris sat down with Ed Hammelman, a self-taught master of wood chip carving whose detailed sculptures have been turning heads for decades.

Hammelman, who began carving at age 17 or 18, has spent the last 50 years perfecting his art. Initially inspired by watching a carver at Johnson Lumber Company, he later refined his technique after attending a seminar by Wayne Barton, widely regarded as America’s premier chip carver. Though the transition set him back temporarily, Hammelman said it took about six to eight months to return to his previous level, only this time with significantly improved quality.
