SO FAR: This morning, the State's Digital Forensic Analyst, Ian Whiffin, faced nearly 3 hours of cross-exam. He admitted that: i) the cell phone's recorded steps matched the approximate distance from the car to the front door and that he was generally walking in that direction; ii) The victim's phone lost heat much more slowly than phones lost heat in Whiffin's "freezer-battery" tests; iii) he had NO IDEA what the temperature in Canton MA was on the night O'keefe died; and iii) Cellbrite removed the 2:27:40 time stanp from Jen McCabe's phone. On redirect he testified that the battery in his test did not have a coat or warming agent (like a body next to it) to keep it from losing heat quickly and that the data which Cellbrite removed was because it was confusing to customers why a tab would show the wrong time that site was pulled up. He is still on re-direct exam.
Defense barely began cross when we broke for lunch and jury was sent home for the day.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Continued re-direct Exam of Ian Whiffin and Re-cross.. Additional State witnesses as time allows.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
During a long and widely watched trial last year, Karen Read was prosecuted for murder in the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Allegedly a victim of hitting him with her vehicle. Read is charged with Intentional Murder, Vehicular Manslaughter (Accidental) and Leaving the scene of a "hit and run."

The trial, which included allegations of police misconduct and of a wide-ranging conspiracy among law enforcement officers to frame Read in the killing, ended in a hung jury.

BACKGROUND:
O’Keefe, 46, had been a police officer for 16 years. He was found unresponsive on a snowy January morning outside the suburban home of Brian Albert, a now-retired Boston police sergeant.

O’Keefe was pronounced dead shortly after, and the medical examiner attributed the cause to blunt force trauma to the head and hypothermia. Read, then an equity analyst who had been dating O’Keefe for two years, was arrested in connection with his death days later.
