Predator: Lost Scene Uncovered!
Check out this never-before-seen clip from Predator! Dive into a rare moment where Arnold Schwarzenegger faces off against the iconic alien hunter in a tense, alternate take. A must-watch for fans of the classic sci-fi action flick!
Predator (1987), directed by John McTiernan, is a seminal sci-fi action horror film that follows Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his elite team of commandos on a rescue mission in a Central American jungle, only to be hunted by a technologically advanced extraterrestrial, the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall). The cast includes Carl Weathers as Dillon, Jesse Ventura as Blain, Bill Duke as Mac, Sonny Landham as Billy, Richard Chaves as Poncho, Shane Black as Hawkins, and Elpidia Carrillo as Anna. The screenplay, written by brothers Jim and John Thomas, began as a speculative script titled Hunter, inspired by a Hollywood joke about Rocky Balboa fighting an alien after running out of earthly opponents. Filming took place from March to June 1986 in the jungles of Mexico, primarily around Puerto Vallarta and Palenque, with a budget of approximately $15 million.
The production faced challenges, including harsh jungle conditions with extreme heat, bugs, and cold water, which tested the cast and crew. Initially, Jean-Claude Van Damme was cast as the Predator, envisioned as a nimble, martial arts-based creature, but his smaller stature compared to the muscular cast and dissatisfaction with the original creature design led to his replacement by the 7’2” Kevin Peter Hall. Special effects legend Stan Winston redesigned the Predator, creating its iconic look with mandibles inspired by a sketch he drew while flying with James Cameron. The creature’s invisibility effect was achieved using a red suit and chroma key techniques, while its glowing green blood was made from glow stick fluid mixed with lubricant.
Released on June 12, 1987, by 20th Century Fox, Predator grossed $98 million worldwide and received mixed reviews initially but has since been hailed as a classic, earning an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.8/10 on IMDb. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film’s success spawned a franchise, including sequels (Predator 2 [1990], Predators [2010], The Predator [2018], Prey [2022]), crossovers (Alien vs. Predator), comics, novels, and video games like Predator: Hunting Grounds (2020). Memorable lines like “If it bleeds, we can kill it” and “Get to the chopper” cemented its cultural impact. Schwarzenegger declined to return for sequels due to scheduling conflicts and disputes, notably over $250,000 for Predator 2. The film’s macho ensemble, pioneering effects, and genre-blending narrative—shifting from action to horror—have made it a defining 1980s action flick.
