"Whiskey in the Jar" is a traditional Irish folk song, but Thin Lizzy’s 1972 rock version is one of the most iconic renditions, turning it into a global hit. Released as a single and later included on their album Vagabonds of the Western World (1973), it reached #1 in Ireland and #6 in the UK charts. The song tells the story of a highwayman who robs a military officer, only to be betrayed by his lover, Molly, leading to his imprisonment. Thin Lizzy’s take, led by Phil Lynott’s husky vocals, Eric Bell’s earworm guitar riff, and Brian Downey’s driving drums, gave the old ballad a hard rock edge with a distinct Celtic flair.

Key Details:
Origins: The song dates back to at least the 17th century, possibly inspired by highwayman Patrick Fleming, executed in 1650. It’s been covered by many, including The Dubliners (1967), Metallica (1998, Grammy-winning), and The Pogues with The Dubliners (1990).
Thin Lizzy’s Version: Initially meant as a B-side to “Black Boys on the Corner,” their label, Decca, pushed it as the A-side after their manager, Ted Carroll, saw its potential during a pub rehearsal. The band reluctantly recorded it, with Bell adding a riff inspired by The Chieftains.
Lyrics: Thin Lizzy’s version tweaks the traditional lyrics. Unlike older versions where the protagonist’s weapons are sabotaged, here he shoots Captain Farrell “with both barrels” but still ends up jailed. The chorus features the catchy “Musha ring dum a doo dum a da / Whack for my daddy-o / There’s whiskey in the jar-o.”
Impact: Though a breakthrough, the band grew to resent the song’s success, as it overshadowed their original work and pegged them as a folk-rock act, clashing with their hard rock ambitions.
Covers: Metallica’s heavier 1998 cover, inspired by Thin Lizzy, won a Grammy in 2000. Other notable versions include those by The Grateful Dead, Belle and Sebastian, and even a Norwegian adaptation by Lillebjørn Nilsen.
Why It Stands Out:
Thin Lizzy’s “Whiskey in the Jar” blends raw rock energy with Irish storytelling, making it a timeless anthem. Its dual lead guitars and Lynott’s charismatic delivery set a template for later covers. Despite the band’s frustration, it remains a staple of St. Patrick’s Day playlists and a defining moment in their career.
