RetroInspection - Dracula - pt. 4

Bram Stoker was not the first to try his hand at writing a modern vampire novel. That task fell to Dr. John Polidori some 60 years prior to Dracula's first printing.
A member of Lord Byron's entourage, the doctor dreamt up his tale in the company of literary greats: Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley--who at the same time found the genesis of Frankenstein. Though not as impactful as Dracula, there is little doubt that Stoker did not draw upon it for his own inspiration.
Polidori's life ended only a year after The Vampyre was published attributed to Lord Byron. Suffering from depression and under the weight of gambling debts, the doctor sadly took his own life.
