The Little Mermaid: 1836 VS 1989 - Adaptation or Transformation?

I've spent way too much time going over Hans Christian Anderson's original fairy tale, and compared it to Disney's animated masterpiece. How are they alike, where do they differ, and is it in fact an adaptation or a transformation? All the stuff you never knew and probably never cared to about the origin and alteration of this story, all in one short, concise video!
