These golden, sugar-dusted beauties are one of Portugal’s most addictive street foods—and today, I’m showing you how to make them at home. No fancy equipment, no over-complicated techniques—just real, traditional flavor and that crispy, fluffy texture you remember from the feira.
In this video, I’ll guide you through the entire process: from mixing and resting the dough to frying it to perfection. We’re keeping things authentic, but I’ve also got a little twist—a homemade whisky chili caramel sauce that takes these farturas to the next level.
• Portuguese Farturas – Updated Ingredients
• 🥣 Dry Ingredients:
• 250g all-purpose flour
• 1/2 tsp fine salt
• 1 tsp baking soda (bicarbonato de sódio)
• 1 Tsp baking powder
• (Optional: 1 tsp sugar for a slightly sweeter dough)
• ________________________________________
• 💧 Wet Ingredients:
• 200ml lukewarm water
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ________________________________________
• 🛢️ For Frying & Finishing:
• Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
• Granulated sugar (for coating)
• Cinnamon Powder
Whisky Chili Caramel Sauce – Ingredients
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup water
• 150ml double cream (or heavy cream)
• 2–3 tsp whisky (adjust to taste – a smoky or spicy whisky works great)
• 1/4 to 1/2 tsp cayenne powder (or 1/2 tsp red chili flakes)
• 1/4 tsp salt
