CHINA ENVOY SLAMS U.S. FOR HAITI DESTABILISATION

On 21 April, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Geng Shuang (@chinamission2un on X), reminded the UN Security Council that Haiti’s foreign-instigated violence, which had displaced 1-million people by January 2025, is a direct result of more than a century of US intervention. He argued that the US should be brought to account for consistently undermining Haiti’s sovereignty, not only through past invasions but also by neocolonial sabotage.

Since Haiti’s independence in 1804 following a historic revolution that established the world's first Black-led republic after defeating French enslavers, the Caribbean state has endured relentless foreign aggression. The United States played a prominent role by militarily occupying the country three times, the first and longest stretching from 1915 to 1934, whereby the US seized key Haitian institutions and economic resources.

US policies, such as the imposition of tariffs, have exacerbated the economic and humanitarian crises rather than alleviating them. Plus, the US has backed coups d’état, propped up dictators, and supported UN occupations that have only brought catastrophic harm like sxual violence, human rights abuses and an infamous cholera outbreak that klled at least 10,000 Haitians, a crime for which the UN has never been fully held accountable. Now, the US-backed and UNSC-sanctioned Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) led by Kenyan police officers starting in June 2024 has proven futile in curbing the surging violence.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has also documented an influx of sophisticated weaponry into Haiti, much of it traced back to the United States, particularly the state of Florida. As both the UNODC and Shuang pointed out, the arms flow has strengthened the capacity of gangs to the extent that they have overwhelmed the state security apparatus. Further, reports demonstrate the connection between Haiti’s gangs and the country’s bourgeoisie that colludes with foreign powers.
