The History of Baiterek Tower

The Baiterek Tower stands as one of Kazakhstan’s most iconic symbols, located in the heart of its capital city, Astana. It was commissioned by the country’s first President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, as a monument to Kazakhstan’s new identity following its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. After moving the capital from Almaty to Akmola (renamed Astana in 1998), Nazarbayev sought to create a structure that would symbolize national renewal, unity, and ambition. Inspired by an ancient Kazakh legend about the Tree of Life and the sacred bird Samruk, who laid a golden egg in its branches, Baiterek was designed to represent the connection between past traditions and a bright, modern future. In the legend, the golden egg symbolizes hope and prosperity, while the tree connects the underworld, the earthly world, and the heavens — powerful imagery for a young nation charting its own course.
