This Week’s Lesson

Today we are in Lesson-05 in the series “Rebuilding the Covenant Community” from the book of Nehemiah.

This is Volume II of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.

The lesson is titled “Finish What You Start – Part I” and our focus passage is Nehemiah 5.

Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we concluded our teaching of Nehemiah 3-4, a study we called “Work, Watch, Pray”.

In these two chapters we saw how the work on the wall rebuilding project steadily advanced.

In CH3, we learned how the Jewish Exiles worked on repairing the walls and the gates around the city.

It was a very detailed account of who was involved and what was accomplished. People from all classes of society joined the effort. Men and women, priests and laymen, worked side by side.

Most of the community was involved but there were a few who refused to help. Still the work got done.

As the work progressed, the enemies of God’s people attempted derail the work.

Their opposition tactics involved both mockery and physical threats of harm as we saw in CH4.

Still under Nehemiah’s leadership the people persevered by always putting their trust in God.

In today’s lesson we begin our look at Nehemiah 5-6 as the Jewish Exiles continue working to finish rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.

As we concluded our study of Nehemiah 3-4, physical threats on the Jewish workers were still present.

Despite of the mockery and threats, the wall rebuilding project had progressed nicely, but it was not quite finished.

Nehemiah is going to be faced with multiple disruptions to keep him from his high priority task.

The enemy’s tactics will change again, and the pressure will be intensified. There will also be internal strife threatening the completion of the project.

How will Nehemiah and the people respond? How will they overcome these disruptions to their work?

Let’s get started.
