A major leak from Moscow’s medical database has exposed Russia’s secret recruitment of thousands of foreign mercenaries to fight in Ukraine, despite President Vladimir Putin’s public denials. Investigated by the Russian outlet iStories and reported by The Kyiv Post, the leak shows over 1,500 foreign fighters from nearly 50 countries enlisted between April 2023 and May 2024. Recruitment operations were centred around a Moscow apartment block, where foreign volunteers, primarily from Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, and India, were swiftly processed, medically screened, issued bank cards, and dispatched for military training.
