Biography of Hakim Abul-Majd and the history of his shrine
Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical figures. today we are describing biography of Hakim Abul-Majd and the history of his shrine.
Hakim Abul-Majd Majdud ibn Adam Sanai Ghaznavi, more commonly known simply as Sanai, was a prominent Persian Sunni Muslim poet, philosopher, and mystic who played a pioneering role in the development of Sufi literature. He was born in the city of Ghazni, located in present-day Afghanistan, around the year 1080 CE. Sanai lived during the era of the Ghaznavid Empire and was closely associated with the royal court of Sultan Bahram Shah, who ruled from 1117 to 1157 CE. Despite enjoying favor and position in the court, Sanai ultimately renounced worldly pleasures and courtly life in favor of spiritual reflection, retreat, and poetic expression dedicated to the divine.
Sanai’s legacy is most strongly preserved through his mystical poetry, especially in works like *Hadiqat al-Haqiqa* (The Walled Garden of Truth), which is one of the earliest Persian Sufi texts to blend poetic beauty with deep metaphysical and spiritual wisdom. He laid the foundation for later Sufi poets like Attar and Rumi, who both acknowledged Sanai’s influence in shaping their own philosophical and poetic perspectives. His poetry reflected not just theological themes but also ethical, philosophical, and psychological insights into the human soul’s relationship with God.
The exact year of Sanai's death is not definitively recorded, but most scholars agree he passed away between 1131 and 1141 CE. His final years were likely spent in contemplation and spiritual instruction, far from the political intrigues of the Ghaznavid court. He died in his native city of Ghazni, where he was also buried. Over time, Sanai’s burial site gained recognition as a place of reverence, especially among poets, mystics, and admirers of Persian literature.
The shrine of Sanai is located in the historic city of Ghazni, Afghanistan. It is not a grand or highly elaborate structure like some other Sufi shrines, but it holds deep cultural and spiritual importance due to Sanai’s literary and mystical stature. It is believed that his admirers and followers, possibly including patrons from the Ghaznavid period and later rulers who valued Persian culture and Sufism, took steps to honor his memory by constructing a tomb over his grave. The shrine has seen several restorations and renovations over the centuries, often by local rulers, spiritual communities, or Persianate dynasties that revered Sanai as a pioneer of Sufi thought.
Though the shrine has suffered from the ravages of time, neglect, and regional conflict, it continues to be a symbolic site for those who seek to connect with the spiritual heritage of classical Persian Sufism. Pilgrims and literary enthusiasts who visit Ghazni often make a point to pay their respects at Sanai’s tomb. Despite the simplicity of the site, it holds an aura of reverence, as it is the final resting place of a poet whose verses continue to echo in the hearts of seekers across the Muslim world. Sanai’s shrine, like his poetry, stands as a silent guide to truth, love, and divine wisdom.
With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Sakhi Sarwar and the history of his Shrine.
