Biography of Shaban-i Veli and the history of his shrine

Dekhti Aankhooon aur sountay kaanoon ko Asslamoalaikum, sisters, brothers friends and elders, in informative series videos of Islamic ascolars, sufisaints, cultural heritages, islamic philosophys, islamic mysticisms and historical figures. today we are describing biography of Shaban-i Veli and the history of his shrine.

Shaban-i Veli, also written as Shaban Wali, was a renowned Ottoman Sufi saint and spiritual leader who lived during the 15th and 16th centuries. He was the founder of the Shabaniyya branch of the Khalwatiyya Sufi order, which played a significant role in the spiritual and social life of the Ottoman Empire. Though there are different opinions about his exact year of birth, recent sources suggest that he may have been born in 902 AH (1497 AD), 905 AH (1499-1500 AD), or possibly even earlier in 886 AH (1481 AD). He was born in the Ta?köprü district of Kastamonu, a historic city in northern Anatolia, in present-day Turkey. Shaban-i Veli received his early spiritual training under the guidance of the great Sufi master Hayreddin Tokadi of Bolu, and he went on to become one of the most influential figures in Anatolian Sufism. His teachings emphasized humility, devotion, and the purification of the soul through remembrance of God (dhikr), which attracted many disciples and led to the establishment of a strong spiritual lineage.

Shaban-i Veli passed away in the year 976 AH, corresponding to 1569 AD. After his death, his followers and admirers sought to preserve his legacy by building a shrine over his final resting place. His tomb and the adjoining dervish lodge (tekke), known as the ?aban-? Veli Dergah, are located in the city of Kastamonu, where he spent much of his life preaching, teaching, and guiding others on the spiritual path. The shrine, constructed shortly after his death, became a center of spiritual activity and a revered site of pilgrimage for centuries. It was built and maintained by his disciples and successors in the Shabaniyya order, particularly under the leadership of the fifth sheikh of the dergah, Ömer Fuâdî, who also wrote an important biographical work titled *Menâk?b-? ?erîf-i Pir-i Halveti Hazret-i ?a'bân-? Veli*. This work serves as a key source of information about the life, miracles, and teachings of Shaban-i Veli.

The shrine and complex were constructed in the classical Ottoman architectural style, reflecting the spiritual dignity and cultural richness of the time. Over the centuries, the ?aban-? Veli Dergah has been restored and expanded, and it continues to serve as a sacred space for reflection, prayer, and connection to Sufi traditions. Every year, numerous visitors from across Turkey and other parts of the Muslim world come to Kastamonu to pay their respects at the shrine, especially during the annual commemoration of his Urs (death anniversary), which is observed with dhikr gatherings, spiritual talks, and Sufi music. Today, the shrine of Shaban-i Veli stands not only as a historical monument but as a living center of Sufi spirituality, keeping alive the legacy of a saint whose influence still resonates through the teachings and practices of the Shabaniyya order.

With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow, tomorrow we will describe the biography of Shah Maroof Khushabi and the history of his Shrine.
