Sachal Sarmast, also known as Sacho Sarmast, was a renowned Sindhi Sufi poet, mystic, and philosopher whose life and teachings left a lasting impact on the spiritual and literary heritage of Sindh. He was born around 1739 in the village of Daraza, near Ranipur, in present-day Khairpur District, Sindh, Pakistan. His real name was Abdul Wahab Faruqi, but he is fondly remembered by the name "Sachal," meaning "truthful," for his devotion to truth and divine love. Sachal Sarmast passed away in 1827, and following his death, his legacy continued to grow through his poetry, which he composed in multiple languages including Sindhi, Persian, Urdu, Arabic, and Punjabi. His poetry reflects deep mysticism, universal love, unity of all religions, and the pursuit of divine truth. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Sufi poets in Sindhi literature and is often compared with other great Sufi saints like Rumi and Bulleh Shah.

Sachal Sarmast’s final resting place is in his hometown of Daraza Sharif, where a beautiful shrine was built to honor his memory and preserve his spiritual legacy. The shrine is located approximately 8 kilometers from Ranipur, in the Khairpur District of Sindh. This spiritual complex has become a significant site for pilgrims, devotees, and lovers of poetry who travel from across Pakistan and abroad to pay their respects. The shrine was constructed by Mir Rustam Khan Talpur, the then ruler of Khairpur, who was deeply influenced by Sachal Sarmast’s teachings. As a patron of culture and spirituality, Mir Rustam Talpur played a vital role in ensuring that Sachal’s tomb was properly built and maintained as a sacred place for future generations.
