Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (The Red Baron) born May 2, 1892, in Breslau, Germany [now Wrocław, Poland]—died April 21, 1918, in Vaux-sur-Somme, France) was Germany’s foremost aviator and leading ace during World War I. Known in English as Baron von Richthofen or the Red Baron, he served as a fighter pilot with the German Air Force and is recognized as the ace-of-aces of the conflict, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories.
Coming from a prosperous family, Richthofen and his younger brother Lothar followed their father into military careers. In 1912, Richthofen attained the rank of lieutenant in the 1st Uhlan Cavalry Regiment of the Prussian Army. As a member of this regiment, he fought in Russia following the outbreak of World War I and subsequently participated in the invasion of Belgium and France. With the onset of trench warfare, which rendered cavalry less effective, Richthofen transitioned to infantry duties. In 1915, he transferred to the Imperial Air Service and entered combat as a fighter pilot in September 1916.
Richthofen quickly established himself as an exceptional fighter pilot and became the leader of Jasta 11 in 1917. Later, he led the larger fighter wing Jagdgeschwader I, commonly referred to as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus," due to the vibrant colors of its aircraft and the unit's mobility, which resembled a traveling circus, frequently setting up in tents on makeshift airfields. By 1918, Richthofen had achieved national hero status in Germany and garnered respect from his adversaries.
He was shot down and killed over France near Vaux-sur-Somme on April 21, 1918. Richthofen never married and had no known children. His career, particularly the circumstances surrounding his death, has been the subject of extensive discussion and debate. He remains one of the most recognized fighter pilots in history and has inspired numerous books, films, and other media, often associated with his Red Baron moniker and his iconic red Fokker Dr.I.
