"Desire is the cause of sorrow. Desire is the cause of fear. For one who is free from desire, there is no sorrow. And how could there be fear?"
-The Buddha, in the Dhammapada.

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Once again, the Buddha is reminding us that the lack of contentment comes from desiring things that we don't have and this grasping, this searching or yearning and hunger for things to be different than they are is the cause for, he says in this quote, it's translated as sorrow, but it means stress, frustration, anxiety. Worries that we're not going to achieve our goals or get what we want. This is a form of suffering. And he says desire also causes fear, which is very similar. We're afraid we won't get what we want. We have anxiety and stress, which are forms of fear. So the Buddha here is. Again, coming back to the very basic theme of his teaching, or one of the basic themes. So he is pointing back the finger at showing us to show us that the solution to so much of our problems is to find true contentment. And as we will see in other months and other chapters, how do we practice finding contentment? Principally through the practice of sitting meditation.
