Gulbrand Lunde (1901–1942) was a Norwegian chemist, politician, and ideologue who became one of the most influential NS cultural figures in Scandinavia. His work, The Norse Ideals (De norrøne verdier), articulated a National Socialist vision rooted in pre-Christian Nordic values, blending racial science, folklore, and militant nationalism.

Background: A Norwegian scientist (PhD in chemistry) turned NS propagandist.

Role in WWII:

Minister of Culture (1941–1942) in Vidkun Quisling’s NS-aligned government.

Leader of Nasjonal Samling (Norway’s NS party).

Promoted Germanic paganism as an alternative to Christianity.

Death (1942): Killed in a car crash

The Norse Ideals – Core Themes
Lunde’s ideology was a fusion of Viking ethos and National Socialism:

Blood & Soil (Blod og Jord)

Norway’s strength came from its peasantry—uncorrupted by modernity.

Urbanization and liberalism were Jewish plagues.

The Return of the Aryan Gods

Christianity weakened the Norse spirit; a revival of Odinism was necessary.

Hitler was seen as a modern saga-king, leading the Germanic rebirth.

Anti-Jewish Struggle

Judaism = the antithesis of Norse honor (parasitic, rootless, materialist).

Quotes from The Norse Ideals:

"The Jew has no homeland but gold, no god but usury."

Promotion of large, healthy Nordic families.

His scientific background gave credibility to racial theories.

His death marked the end of a genuine Nordic NS cultural revival.

After 1945, his works were banned in Norway.

Allied occupation forces destroyed most copies of The Norse Ideals.
