If I Were the Devil

One... two... three... four...

If I were the devil,
The first thing I’d do?
I’d pretend I ever gave a damn about you.

I’d let you catch a glimpse of all your deepest desires,
Then watch the flames in your eyes burn like hellfire.

I’d gather every wolf across the land,
Make them tear each other apart—
Tooth and nail, hand to hand.

Then I’d find the sheep,
Stir them up, make ‘em boil the pot.
Because once the wolves are gone,
The sheep are all I want.

The devil walks among us, friends—
This much is true.
And I don’t know if he’s red,
And I don’t know if he’s blue.
But I do know this:
It’s time we took a good look around.

If I were the devil,
This world wouldn’t be my playground...

As I placed that thorny crown upon my furrowed brow,
I’d shine beneath the joyful tears of a screaming crowd.
I once brainwashed the parents—
Now I own the world.
I’m in every schoolhouse,
Lecturing little boys and girls.

The devil walks among us, friends—
And I know this is true.
But I don’t know if it's me,
And I don’t know if it’s you.
Still one thing’s for sure:
It’s time we took a good look around.

If I were the devil,
This world wouldn’t be my playground.

And for my final act?
Let me tell you what I’d do—
I’d have everyone so medicated,
They’d never see the truth.

My glowing herbs, my horned disguise,
Would hide in plain sight,
Right before your eyes.

And the best part of it all?
They’d comply with their own demise.

The devil walks among us, friends—
You know it’s true.
But I don’t know if it’s me,
And I don’t know if it’s you.

Still I know what we need—
To stop and look around.

If I were the devil,
This world would be mine to see.
I’d witness every atrocity...
And maybe, just maybe—it would frighten me.

So I’d run back home,
With a story to tell—
I’d gather all my demon friends,
And say:

"I’ve always preferred hell."

Try again.
