Week 13 Tutorial: The Rise of David—The Fall of Saul (1 Samuel 16–31; 2 Samuel 1; Psalms x24)

Week 13 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge see us continue on in the Book of 1 Samuel as well as reading through 24 of the Psalms which, apparently, correspond to this point of the biblical narrative.

In this tutorial, Chad helps us take a step back to appreciate that 1 and 2 Samuel are best seen as one (single) book, focussed on three significant biblical characters—Samuel, Saul and David—and the transitions between their leadership eras.

While the transition of the prophet Samuel to king Saul was all smooth-sailing, as we shall discover throughout the Book of Samuel, it wasn't so from kings Saul to David!

Chad also encourages us to take note of the distinct character contrasts highlighted in these stories which very much play into the 'older brother vs. younger brother' narrative we witnessed over and again in the Book of Genesis.
