"Monks, the world is aflame. Why is the world aflame? Whatever arises in dependence on contact with the senses, whether pleasant, painful, or neutral, those two are aflame. Aflame with what? Aflame with the fire of craving, the fire of aversion, the fire of delusion."
-The Buddha

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
This comes from a famous sutra, and the Buddha is using a very kind of dramatic metaphor here, but he is saying that craving or attachment, aversion and ignorance, the three root poisons, he is equating those with fire. Fire that burns. It burns individuals who are trying to find the cool, refreshing water of contentment. So, the senses and the craving, the attachments, the desires, the dissatisfaction of our life or our circumstances and wanting something more or different and that ambition and that striving, these are the things that lead to the flames of discontent and suffering.
