A magnitude 6.2 quake shakes Istanbul and injures more than 230 people

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 shook Istanbul and other areas of Turkey on Wednesday, prompting widespread panic and scores of injuries in the city of 16 million people, though there were no immediate reports of serious damage.

At least 236 people were treated for injuries they suffered while trying to jump from buildings or for panic attacks — most of them in Istanbul, where residents are on tenterhooks because the city is considered at high risk for a major quake.

The earthquake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (about 6 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey, with its epicenter about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Istanbul, in the Sea of Marmara.

It was felt in the neighboring provinces of Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa and Balikesir and in the coastal city of Izmir, some 550 kilometers (340 miles) south of Istanbul. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the earthquake lasted 13 seconds and was followed by more than 100 aftershocks — the strongest measuring 5.9 in magnitude.

Volcano eruption sends 3 km high ash plume over Costa Rica.

At 2:14 p.m. local time on Monday, April 21, in Costa Rica, the Poás Volcano violently erupted, spewing a plume of ash over 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) into the air, blanketing the valley and communities within it.

The ‘intense eruption’ has prompted health officials to urgently alert residents and visitors in the area, after the 10-minute explosive eruption sent toxic volcanic ash and debris into the air, with recorded levels of sulfur dioxide emissions exceeding measurements of 600 tons per day.

Monday afternoon’s sudden and volatile eruption of the Poás volcano prompted officials to close the popular tourist destination of the Parque Nacional Volcán Poás (Poás Volcano National Park) until further notice to ensure the safety of visitors and residents, while seismic activity continued to be recorded.

An orange alert remained active for the National Park , issued by the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) back on March 28 when the volcano displayed activity.

According to the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the communities of Zarcero, Grecia, Alajuela, Heredia, and San José were blanketed in thick ash, in addition to areas in southwest Costa Rica witnessing particles from the volcanic eruption carried into the area by high winds.

Residents were said to have taken to social media to share their photos and videos of their homes and vehicles buried in ash. OVSICORI recorded the blast of ash reaching unprecedented heights of 15,446 feet (4,708 meters) above sea level, and is urging residents to continue to monitor for updates on the situation.
