The events recorded in Numbers 20 marked the passing of a generation. Entering the 40th year of their wilderness wanderings, the generation that was 20 years and older when coming out of Egypt had perished, leaving only Joshua and Caleb to lead the crossing of the Jordan River into the new land. Moses experienced the deaths of his sister Miriam (Numbers 20:1) and his brother Aaron (Numbers 20:25-29; 33:38).
