Should we reinstitute mental health facilities for long term care?

The question of whether America needs state psychiatric hospitals for inpatient care is complex and increasingly relevant. State psychiatric hospitals, once the primary form of mental health care for individuals with severe mental illnesses, largely disappeared after deinstitutionalization in the 1960s and 1970s. This shift aimed to treat people within their communities, but the transition was not matched with adequate funding and resources for outpatient services. Today, many individuals with severe mental illnesses end up in emergency rooms, jails, or homeless, as there are not enough accessible, long-term inpatient options. Reviving state psychiatric hospitals could provide specialized, intensive care for those who need long-term treatment and are unable to function safely outside of a structured environment. Such facilities, if modernized to prioritize humane, recovery-oriented care, could address a critical gap in mental health services, complementing outpatient care and helping prevent the cycle of hospitalization, incarceration, and homelessness that many individuals face. Re-establishing these hospitals could also alleviate pressure on emergency services and corrections facilities, which are often ill-equipped to handle severe psychiatric needs.
