The Importance of Emphasizing Playing in Multiples: Clip 2
This concept might seem novice, however, I didn’t put much thought into “Emphasizing Playing in Multiples,” until 2011. While sitting down for an all-night X & O session with Coach Mike McBride, who was Jim Boone’s assistant at Tusculum U. (TN); he told me about how the TU staff stressed this concept, daily. Every open gym, practice, &/or game, the TU staff challenged their team(s) to execute as many positive actions in-a-row, as possible. They charted this concept & challenged their players to beat their previous score(s). One of the aspects I really liked, while keeping the staff from closing at the Greenville, TN; Applebees, was the actions they charted were not restricted to scoring or getting a stop. They charted any & all positive actions, here are a few examples:
Setting a solid screen
The cutter executing an effective shape-up
Bone crushing, legal, block outs
Threading the needle on a difficult pass
Effectively defeating a trap
Feeding the post
Offensive rebounding
Exuding offensive patience - getting the ball inside &/or to their best shooter after several reversals
Over-the-top, specific/accurate offensive chatter
We started emphasizing this concept & it added an additional emphasis on precise execution to our players. If anyone is interested, contact me about our old “Chicken Wing Reward System.”
The team in the white uniforms are the ‘17 Maumee HS Panthers. I was very fond of this team & this was one of my favorite games of my coaching career. The HS administration scheduled our Senior Trip during our Sectional Tournament. As HS kids do, they jump into stuff without looking at their calendars. I’m at fault as well, as I didn’t catch it either - and teaching outside of the high school didn’t help either (K-5 Maumee PE Teacher). So, we had to put players on the court who rarely played &/or were primarily JV players. We ended up pulling the upset & then fell in the Sectional Championship to Chad Burt’s Wauseon Indians, who eventually played for a State Championship that season.
In this short clip, you’ll see us lose the tip, get a defensive stop v. an overload play, & then burn our Lane/Lane Blocker-Mover offense until we got our best shooter open for a 3-pt. Shot off a Wall Screen.
