AUTHORITARIANISM IS THE AMERICAN WAY - Treacherous Times

April 22, 2025

The Trends Journal - Gerald Celente

George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 portrays a totalitarian dystopian nightmare where the government exerts absolute control over society through mass surveillance, propaganda, indoctrination, and the violent suppression of dissent.

While the United States is not equivalent to the Oceania dictatorship depicted in “1984,” there are troubling parallels between the totalitarian politics of the novel and the rising neofascist tendencies apparent in American society today.

A note on the term “neofascism.” Some writers argue that the U.S. shares similar characteristics with the fascist states of Germany and Italy before the end of WWII. In contrast, neofascism can be described as follows:

Neofascism is a contemporary adaptation of fascist ideology that emerged after World War II, often incorporating elements of traditional fascism—such as ultranationalism, authoritarianism, and the suppression of political opposition—while adapting to modern political, social, and economic contexts. Unlike classical fascism, which depended on mass mobilization, militarism, and overt totalitarian rule, neofascism typically manifests in more subtle forms, including:

Nationalist and Populist Rhetoric: Emphasizing the supremacy of a particular nation, ethnicity, or culture, often framing outsiders (immigrants, minorities, or political opponents) as threats.

Authoritarian Tendencies: Seeking to undermine democratic institutions, the judiciary, the press, and political opposition while centralizing power in a strong leader or ruling party.
Scapegoating and Xenophobia: Blaming societal problems on marginalized groups, immigrants, or perceived enemies, often promoting conspiracy theories.

Scapegoating and Xenophobia: Blaming societal problems on marginalized groups, immigrants, or perceived enemies, often promoting conspiracy theories.

Corporatism and Crony Capitalism: Favoring a close alliance between government and powerful business interests, sometimes promoting state control over key industries.

Militarism and Law-and-Order Policies: Advocating for aggressive policing, expansion of state security forces, or even paramilitary organizations to suppress dissent.

Anti-Globalism and Anti-Liberalism: Rejecting international institutions, liberal democracy, and progressive social policies in favor of nationalism and traditional values.
