The world of Lords of the Fallen centers on the eternal struggle between gods, humans, and demons in the twin realms of Axiom and Umbral. The narrative begins with the fall of the tyrannical demon god Adyr, who was defeated 1,000 years ago by three human heroes: Antanas, Iselle, and Damarose. These heroes became the founders of the Church of Orian Radiance, a theocratic institution worshiping the god Orius, who is believed to embody light, purity, and order. The Church used the power of Radiant magic to govern humanity, enforcing strict dogma to suppress Adyr’s lingering influence.
However, Adyr’s defeat was not absolute. His essence was sealed away, and his demonic Rhogar forces were driven back to their realm. The Church maintained control through the Hallowed Sentinels, an elite order of warriors wielding Radiant magic, who used Umbral lamps to peer into the realm of the dead and ensure Adyr’s influence remained dormant. These lamps, powered by the god Orius, allowed the Sentinels to traverse between Axiom and Umbral, a dual-reality mechanic central to the game’s lore and gameplay.
Over the centuries, the Church’s rule became increasingly oppressive, leading to rebellion and the rise of the Dark Crusaders, a group of warriors who rejected the Church’s dogma but still fought against Adyr’s influence. Meanwhile, Adyr’s followers, including those who would align with the Lord class, secretly worked to resurrect him, believing his return would bring true freedom from Orius’ control.

The game’s story begins as Adyr’s resurrection becomes imminent. The five beacons—ancient structures built by the Hallowed Sentinels to suppress Adyr’s power—begin to weaken, corrupted by his influence. Rhogar demons start to invade Axiom, and the Church of Orian Radiance is losing its grip. The player takes on the role of a Dark Crusader, one of the Lampbearers, tasked with cleansing the beacons to prevent Adyr’s return. The Umbral lamp you wield allows you to shift between Axiom and Umbral, revealing hidden truths and battling enemies across both realms.
The narrative hinges on three major factions and their goals:
The Church of Orian Radiance: They worship Orius and seek to maintain the status quo by keeping Adyr sealed. They view the Lampbearers as tools to achieve this, but their methods are harsh, and their dogma stifles free will.

Adyr’s Followers: These include figures like Judge Cleric (a corrupted Hallowed Sentinel) and those who align with the Lord class. They see Adyr as a liberator who will free humanity from Orius’ oppressive light. Adyr promises power and freedom, but his rule would plunge the world into chaos and demonic tyranny.

The Dark Crusaders: The player’s faction, a group of warriors who operate outside the Church’s control. They fight against Adyr but also question the Church’s methods, seeking a balance between light and darkness.
