Embracing Self-Awareness and Growth: Life Lessons from Michael Kohan and Martin Pytela
#LifeEnthusiast #health #wellness
On a recent episode of the Life Enthusiast podcast, host Martin Pytela welcomed Michael Kohan, life coach and founder of Elevate Life Project, for an illuminating conversation weaving together culture, self-awareness, group psychology, and the realities of health in modern society. Their dialogue is a treasure trove for anyone interested in personal development, alternative health, and understanding the hidden forces shaping our lives.
The Role of Questioning and Cultural Roots
One standout thread from the conversation was the value of questioning inherited from Jewish culture. Kohan points out that for many, especially within Judaism, the tradition isn’t to blindly accept answers but rather to constantly question, debate, and seek understanding about faith, rituals, and personal purpose. As he aptly put it, “Part of being Jewish isn’t blindfolded faith in God... It is a conversation about what God is and what that means for you.” This cultural instinct for critical thinking, he notes, has parallels in academic and personal achievement, and is something we can all bring into our self-examination, regardless of heritage.
Their shared experience as children of Eastern European Jewish families provided a launchpad for discussing the effect of community and oppression, whether under totalitarian regimes, as Martin experienced in Czechoslovakia, or subtler forms of social and algorithmic control today. Both agreed: the human need to belong can lead us unquestioningly into the echo chambers of social media, where our views are shaped not by our reflection, but by the algorithms serving us validation and outrage.
The Environment Shapes Our Beliefs
Kohan highlighted that our beliefs about health, politics, and even self-worth are shaped as much by our immediate environment as they are by rational thinking. He shared eye-opening anecdotes of clients whose worldviews shifted dramatically after moving to a new state or entering a new community. The lesson: beliefs are malleable, susceptible to the tribes we join, online or offline.
This, he warns, is fertile ground for the rise of “perceived beliefs”—emotionally-based assumptions not founded on logic. When life is financially or emotionally stressful, unhealthy foods are more accessible, and social media offers a temporary escape but cements new biases. “You create a little village for you that does not necessarily represent the world at all,” Kohan observes about our digital lives.
