Legacy East Range Living Last Supper 2025
Over the last 20-plus years, the people of Faith Assembly have put on a Maundy Thursday production of The Living Last Supper. In 2020, the production had to be placed on hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, and, until this year, it was on hold while the church went through some changes. In September of 2024, Faith Assembly and Legacy Church partnered, and one of our first decisions was to bring back this much-loved tradition. Legacy Church East Range is proud to present this production and hopes that it will bless you, but more importantly, we hope it will be a touch-point for you with others in your life to introduce them to the powerful message of both the cross and the gospel.
Some things about the Leonardo da Vinci painting:
The way Jesus was set apart from the others portrays the loneliness He must have felt, even with the other disciples, due to their lack of understanding of His true purpose.
The arrangement of the disciples in groups of three behind the table, including Judas, is of interest. Most other artists had placed John, the Beloved Disciple, with his head on Christ's shoulder, and Judas as the only one on the opposite side of the table, facing Jesus.
Perhaps most important: da Vinci's masterful use of perspective made the whole picture draw the viewers' eyes to the face of Jesus. The lines of the table, the ceiling, the walls, the window behind Christ, and the arrangement and height of the men, all focus on Jesus, so that everyone in the dining room felt as though they were dining at the table with Him
Da Vinci also focuses on the betrayal. The spilled salt near Judas was an ancient symbol of betrayal. Also, Jesus said that His followers were to be the salt of the earth, and Judas became the spilled or unsavory salt.
The picture itself, as the men portray it, captures the moment that shows the disciples in great surprise, unbelief, and confusion after Jesus has told them, "One of you will betray Me. One who eats with me tonight." They are asking each other and themselves, who could do such a thing? As you watch this video, it should cause each person to reflect on the times we have denied or betrayed our Lord and make us ask the question:
"Is it I? Is it I?"
