What Happens in 2 Samuel 10?
In this chapter, David faces an external threat from the Ammonites, a long-time enemy of Israel. The king of Ammon dies, and his son Hanun takes the throne. David, wishing to show kindness to Hanun as he had to his father, sends ambassadors to offer his condolences. However, Hanun’s advisors deceive him, suggesting that David’s men are spies. As a result, Hanun humiliates David's messengers by shaving half their beards and cutting off their garments.

This act of disrespect leads to a war between Israel and the Ammonites. David sends Joab, his military commander, to confront the Ammonites. Joab divides his army into two groups to outmaneuver the enemy, and with God’s help, the Ammonites are defeated.

The chapter highlights David’s wisdom in leadership as well as the cost of dishonoring others.
