What Happens in 2 Samuel 9?
This chapter highlights David’s deep kindness and loyalty, as he honors a promise he made to his friend Jonathan (Saul’s son). Despite having the power to wipe out all rivals to the throne, David shows mercy and grace to Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, who is crippled and living in obscurity.

David asks, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” (v. 1). When he finds Mephibosheth, who thought he was doomed, David restores his family’s land, invites him to dine at the king’s table, and treats him like one of his own sons.

Mephibosheth, astonished, asks, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?” (v. 8), but David reassures him, showing that kindness and loyalty can triumph even in the midst of political power struggles.
