What Happens in 2 Samuel 3?
The tension between the house of Saul and the house of David continues, but the tide is slowly turning. David’s house grows stronger, while Saul’s grows weaker. David also builds his family, taking more wives and having sons in Hebron.

Meanwhile, Abner, Saul’s powerful general, begins to shift sides. After a falling out with Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, over a personal accusation, Abner swears loyalty to David. He promises to bring all of Israel under David’s rule, recognizing that God had appointed David as king.

David agrees, but not without conditions—he asks for Michal, Saul’s daughter and his former wife, to be returned to him. Abner follows through and begins rallying support for David across the tribes of Israel.

But just as the path to unity begins, Joab—David’s commander—murders Abner out of revenge for the death of his brother Asahel. David mourns Abner publicly and distances himself from the act, showing that he seeks peace, not bloodshed.
