Anesthesia (German: Narkose) is a 1929 German silent film directed by Alfred Abel and starring Renée Héribel and Jack Trevor.

The film's art direction was by Willy Brummer and Julius von Borsody.

Synopsis:

Anesthesia (Narkose), directed by Alfred Abel, is a haunting psychological drama set within the austere corridors of a Berlin hospital. When a critically injured woman is brought in for emergency surgery, her presence triggers a cascade of memories in the attending surgeon—a man emotionally numbed by years of clinical detachment. As the anesthetic takes hold of the patient, the film shifts into an introspective journey through the doctor's suppressed guilt, lost love, and moral compromises. Inspired by the novella of Stefan Zweig and scripted with the insight of Béla Balázs, the film explores the symbolic interplay between physical unconsciousness and emotional anesthesia. With expressive cinematography by Günther Krampf and a dreamlike score, Anesthesia stands as a poetic meditation on the cost of emotional repression in the face of human suffering.
