The Key Scripture to Becoming a Better Version of You

As we navigate through life, we search to improve ourselves... whether it is in our career, health or relationships. Out of all of these, God desires that we most seek to become better in our relationships and as we do, we become a better version of our self.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37-39,
[37] “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the first and greatest commandment. [39] And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

How do we love others as God desires us to love others? The key is found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7,
[4] Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [5] It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. [6] Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [7] It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

We can use this passage as a "barometer" for how we treat others. As we practice applying these attributes of love in our interactions with others, we will become a better child, parent, grandparent, cousin, spouse, sibling, friend, neighbor, customer, employer, stranger, and child of God.

As a side note, there might be people who we need to distance ourselves from because they are a detriment to our well-being, but we can still pray for them and have a loving concern within our heart.

Sometimes there's people in our lives who are not equipped to give love back to us, but we love them anyway. As we read in Acts 20:35,
[35] ...the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

So let us seek to improve our relationships through being an embodiment of love... reflecting the light of Jesus. As we do, every area of our life will benefit... from our career to our health to our friendships to our families to our spiritual life...because through the love of others, you will be developing a better version of you!
