The Announcement Of Pope Francis's Passing Today Has Left Many Catholics Subdued. He Had Appeared Fragile For Some Years, So The News Was Not Entirely Unexpected.
The Conversation That Occupied My Table Late This Morning Was About The Remarkable Meeting He Had With Sudanese Leaders In 2019. Evidently Delicate, He Was Assisted To His Knees By A Cardinal. His Breathe Was Heavy And Laden. From That Cold Carpet He Bowed His Head And Lowered Himself Precariously To The Shoes Of Each Sudanese Leader. And Kissed Them. Stranger Still Was When One Of The Leaders Calmly Supported The Pope To Kneel In Order To Have His Own Shoes Kissed. This Moment For Us Was The Sign. The Symbol. It Contained A Detail So Significant, We Were Slack Jawed With Incredulity.
