At eight years old, Nathan experienced a significant loss when his mother passed away from cancer, leading to his family being separated and placed in different homes. He and his younger sisters faced difficulties living with relatives who in an abusive environment. By the age of eleven, Nathan moved in with his step-grandparents, where a lack of discipline allowed him to forge his own path and rules.

During his college years, Nathan struggled with suicidal thoughts, leading to a pivotal moment when he had it out with God in a time of need. Later he would have an intimate and pivotal moment with God, leading to a profound commitment to serve others in faith.

Nathan also discusses the challenges he faced following the loss of his son in a hit and run, and the dramatic effect it had on his own health.
