THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION from 1994 is considered one of the greatest films of all time and a easy movie to get into but initially the film was a flop.

SHAWSHANK is based on a novella from Stephen King and little did he know it would become one of the greatest films of all time. Its story is fantastic as it tells us how banker Andy Dufrane (Tim Robbins) ends up in the notorious Shawshank prison in Maine, his friendship with fellow inmate Red, and his eventual escape from the prison.

Everyone like a feel good story well SHAWSHANK provides that story set with in the confines of the corrupt prison and its evil guards and warden. Andy goes through complete hell in order to break free of Shawshank and ultimately succeeds.

SHAWSHANK almost didn’t recive the cult status is has today. Its initial release was consider a box office flop but like many failed movies, it found its home via Blockbuster. Word of mouth about the film spread enabling it to find a decent home through home media. At the same time, its distribution rights for televison were sold very cheaply and as a result it was shown on TNT and TBS quite often and still to this day. This would not be the last Stephen King book based on prisons turned into a movie. In 1999, THE GREEN MILE was released and it succeeded where SHAWSHANK initially failed. Directed by Frank Darbount, it feels very similar to SHAWSHANK and many consider it a spiritual sequel.
