Becoming a vampire in Bram Stoker's Dracula was a terrible fate--one that condemned the soul of the vampire to an unending nightmare. That nightmare consisted of preying upon even infants, so great was a vampire's desire for blood.
Modern science can be looked to for natural corollaries, and history contains many human monsters who also had an insatiable desire to feast, some literally, on the blood of hapless victims.
Stoker had ample instruction to flesh out the mythology of vampirism.
