In a cautious yet notably constructive shift, Iran and the United States have completed a second round of indirect nuclear talks in Rome, facilitated by Oman’s foreign minister, marking their most serious diplomatic engagement since Donald Trump scrapped the 2015 nuclear deal. Both sides agreed to launch technical discussions aimed at drafting a “fair, enduring and binding” framework, with senior negotiators reconvening in Oman on 26 April. While Iranian officials remain sceptical and stress the need for a “reasonable and calm” approach, Omani mediators expressed optimism, suggesting “even the unlikely is possible.” Trump has revived sanctions but also left the door open for diplomacy, warning of military action if talks fail. Israel’s Netanyahu has echoed hardline threats, insisting Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to play a key role in verification, though it is not yet directly involved. Despite progress, core disagreements persist, particularly around Iran’s uranium enrichment, which remains Tehran’s red line and the West’s biggest concern.
