The case against James Earl Ray was about as open-and-shut as a case could be. First, the witnesses all said the same thing: The shot came from the roominghouse where Ray admitted he was staying. Second, the shot that hit MLK indicated a shot from the roominghouse. Third, the tenants in the roominghouse indicated whomever was staying in room 5-B was tying up the bathroom at the end of the hall during the time of the shooting. Fourth, one of them heard the shot and opened his door, seeing a man fleeing from the bathroom with a bundle. Fifth, that bundle was discovered later in front of a neighboring business with a rifle belonging to Ray, a radio with Ray's prison ID on it, and beer cans with his fingerprints on them. Sixth, the shell casing found in Ray's room matched the slug taken from MLK's body. Seventh, Ray fled the scene afterwards and eighth, when finally apprehended 2 months later, he pled guilty. It was a slam-dunk.
