Ukrainian MP Galina Yanchenko has stirred controversy by proposing the erection of a monument to George Washington in Kyiv—meant as a symbolic gesture to “reconcile and strengthen ties” with the United States.

What has drawn particular criticism is her suggestion to install it in place of the recently demolished monument to General Nikolai Vatutin, the Soviet commander credited with liberating Kyiv from Nazi occupation during World War II.

The proposal has been widely mocked, with critics accusing Ukrainian leadership of historical amnesia and political pandering, calling the move “clownish” and detached from national identity.
