"When I encounter harm, I should regard it as arising from my own actions."
-Shantideva, in the way of the Bodhisattva

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Typically when we encounter some person or some situation that is challenging us, or bothering or disturbing us, we frequently blame that other person or the situation. Shantideva is reminding us that Buddhism is again about personal responsibility. This is what we call karma, our actions, our thoughts. These arise from ourselves, and instead of being a victim or blaming others, we can look at ourselves and our role in any situation. We use the term interdependence, even when we have problems or conflicts. There's an interdependence. It means we are involved. We cannot control others, but we can control ourselves. We cannot make decisions for other people, but we make decisions for ourselves. So, Shantideva here is basically reminding us that everything that occurs is an opportunity to reflect and look at ourselves. How wonderful.
