December 16, 1838 is seen as a defining moment of divine intervention and national identity. When 470 Voortrekkers, led by Andries Pretorius, made a covenant with God, promising to build a church and commemorate the day if they were victorious. Despite being vastly outnumbered by thousands of Zulu warriors under Dingane, the Voortrekkers, using superior firepower and a defensive laager (wagon circle), won decisively at the Battle of Blood River without suffering a single death. The victory was a sign of God's favor and became a central part of Afrikaner heritage, marked for decades as the Day of the Vow (Geloftedag), now observed as the Day of Reconciliation in modern South Africa.
