Pedro II, the last emperor of Brazil, reigned for 58 years over this immense country, 15 times the size of France. While republics were flourishing everywhere else in South America, little Pedro II, aged 6, heir to an imperial family that had largely neglected him, ascended the most exotic throne on the planet.

Curious, open-minded, and passionate about books, he visited Europe to meet the men he admired, such as Victor Hugo and Louis Pasteur. He did everything he could to abolish slavery, the "shame of the Empire," in his words.

Stéphane Bern retraces the life of a leader with a solitary childhood, passionate about science, technology, and literature, who would have dreamed of being… a professor at the Sorbonne.
