Bone fish are Usually found in clear, shallow coastal waters, and are a popular warm-water sportfishing species that are prized for their strength and speed during a pursuit. They can reach a maximum length of 79 cm and a maximum weight of 14 lbs. Bones can have highly silver sides and somewhat darker backs, or they might have olive green backs that merge in with the silver side. At two or three years old, bonefish attain sexual maturity and can live up to 20 years. It migrates to shallow mudflats or sand flats to feed with the incoming tide.
Mature adults may be found alone or in pairs, and youngsters may shoal together.
The diet of bonefish includes shrimps, crabs, fry, and benthic worms. The seagrass meadows are clean and robust, and ledges and drop-offs produce an abundance of tiny prey for them to feast on. It may follow stingrays to catch the small creatures they root from the substrate. One of the best game species for fly fishing and light tackle is the bonefish.
