1.4M In The Dark In Puerto Rico | Entire Island Without Power As Easter Weekend Begins | CLRCUT

An island-wide blackout plunged Puerto Rico into darkness on April 16, just as its largely Catholic population prepared for the sacred Easter weekend. All 1.4 million customers across the island lost power, with Luma Energy confirming, “The entire island is without generation.” Hotels were near capacity, packed with tourists, while residents struggled—some 78,000 people also lost access to water.
As temperatures climbed, so did frustration. Streets filled with the hum of generators and the smell of smoke, while families searched desperately for ice and essentials. Businesses shuttered, transit systems stalled, and even major sporting events were canceled.
For many, this is the latest chapter in a painful and all-too-familiar story. Puerto Rico’s power grid has been fragile since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017. Despite federal support and promises of reform, outages persist, leaving millions vulnerable. The energy crisis disproportionately affects the island’s poor, many of whom cannot afford generators or solar panels.
