Making Pennsylvania Dutch Shoo Fly Pie with Ruthie's Help!

Shoo Fly Pie is a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. There are two types of Shoo Fly Pies--a wet bottom and a dry bottom. You can make either version with this recipe. The difference being that half of the crumble topping gets combined in the syrup mixture with the dry bottom pie.

Shoo Fly Pie Recipe
One 9-inch Deep Dish Pie Crust

Syrup Mixture
1 Cup Molasses
3/4 Tsp Baking Soda
1 Large Egg, slightly beaten
3/4 Cup Hot Water

Topping "Crumbles"
1 1/2 Cups AP Flour
1 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup Shortening

Bake at 400 F for the first 15 minutes. Lower temperature to 350F and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
Let cool on a wire rack.
Store in the refrigerator.
It's best to place this pie on a baking sheet in case it bubbles over the crust.
